UK Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) Clearing House
The UK SAF Clearing House is a programme funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) that provides cross-industry support for the development, testing, qualification, and production of sustainable aviation fuels.
Compared with conventional jet fuel, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) are a key technology that can reduce aviation emissions and achieve lifecycle CO₂ emissions savings of over 70% and help the UK to achieve net zero aviation by 2050.
Before any new SAF can be used in commercial aviation, it must undergo a rigorous qualification process to meet stringent fuel specification standards. This process is essential to ensure that the fuel can be safely used with current aircraft, engines, and supporting infrastructure.
To be approved as a ‘drop-in’ fuel—meaning it performs identically to conventional petroleum-based aviation turbine fuel—a SAF must demonstrate full compatibility. While the qualification journey is both costly and complex, it plays a critical role in maintaining safety and reliability, and remains a key hurdle for bringing new SAF technologies to market.
Our work supports SAF producers on this journey and contributes to the UK Government’s ambition to build a thriving UK SAF production industry, delivering greener transport and supporting its missions to kickstart economic growth and to make Britain a clean energy superpower. The UK SAF Clearing House has a key role in this ambition to establish a UK SAF industry and is aligned with the Government's wider package of policy measures (including the SAF mandate and revenue certainty mechanism) to achieve this.
